PROUST QUESTIONNAIRE

  • ANTIGONE (self-portrayal)
  • What is your greatest fear? No fears, just ‘calafrios’ (goosebumps?).
  • Which living person(s) do you most admire? Nuns & monks. They helped raise me (boarding school).
  • What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? Too analytical. I set high standards for myself ‘and’ for other people as well. It isn’t easy to be in a relationship with me (ask my husband/friends about it!). I’m self-centered, always on the move, mercurial lifestyle, visceral mind.
  • What is the trait you most deplore in others? Superficiality, pettiness, vulgarity.
  • Which living person do you most despise? In particular, I don’t despise anyone, truly. But some people make me feel uncomfortable. I know who they are after a few e-mails. In general, gosh, all the ‘bad’ people out there.
  • Which words or phrases do you most overuse? No, wait, let me think this over.
  • What do you dislike most about your appearance? I feel comfortable in my own skin — ‘glad to have 10 toes and 10 fingers. I’m very proud of my well-earned wrinkles.
  • What is your favorite occupation? Author, artwork, entertainment business, academia.
  • Who are your heroes in real life? People who want to make a difference; kind, honest, hardworking folks. They touch me deep inside and show me what this life is all about (the average Joe?).
  • Which historical figure(s) do you most identify with? I think Abraham Lincoln. There’s something about his independence of thought, freedom of spirit/mind, and principled leadership that greatly inspires me so. Female figures? Probably Cleopatra. She was ambitious, intelligent, a competent governor, but, in her personal life, she kept falling for the ‘wrong guys’–“losers”. What does this ‘say’ about her?
  • What do you consider the most overrated virtue? Discipline, self-control; patience is key.
  • What do you most value in your friends? Loyalty, humbleness, honesty.
  • When and where were you happiest? University student activism/student protests in Brazil, with my best friends, weren’t bad (1980s). Some of them–brilliant physicists/engineers, physicians, journalists, didn’t make it. It was an honor to have met them. Also, the day I became a naturalized citizen. The day I got married. The day I became a Petrean (Peterhouse, Cambridge). Now, with the birth of my company and first published book.
  • What is it that you most dislike? Bullies. Arrogant people. People who “say” one thing and then “do” the complete opposite. Toxic/negative/defensive/narcissistic schizoids who don’t move on, when you don’t even remember their names anymore.
  • If you were to die and come back as a person or thing, what do you think it would be? I wouldn’t want to come back. If at all, I would like go to another place/universe/dimension–a place where true evolved, intelligent, and honorable entities inhabit. Earth is messy, low-level, underground (time is relative; ±70 years sounds like ‘eternity’ on Earth). One time on Earth–the milky way–is enough for me.
  • Who’s your favorite author? They’re all special. But if I had to choose, I would say Charles Darwin–he sees life for what it is. In Cambridge, I lived in Peterhouse grounds–unbelievably, next-door to where Darwin once lived, 1830s (basement flat 22-24, Fitzwilliam Street, Cambridge, U.K.).
  • Motto:
    • “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always.” “Always be yourself, express yourself, have faith in yourself, do not go out and look for a successful personality and duplicate it.” (Bruce Lee). “Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, add what is essentially your own.” (Bruce Lee).
    • “I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations, and you’re not in this world to live up to mine.” (Bruce Lee).
